OH! KOLKATA!

Funny, you know. The thing about places. What makes the place/space the way it is? Do they have a character? A Sense of Space. I've always been intrigued by this aspect of architecture. The effect it has on us and what we as the 'users' contribute in making the space 'humane'. There are so many other factors to it, of course. I did a literature review on this topic in my 4th year of college (while I was studying architecture). Ahh...those were the days! Making this illustrative map for a competition on TDAT got me thinking about this again! It’s an amazing site where artists are invited to submit maps of their favorite place or any place actually. So this is what I made. A map of Calcutta. Though I did not grow up in this city, it’s been home for me for the past 3 years. And plus I am a Bengali. The city never fails to amaze me. I used to stand transfixed in the middle of the road admiring the architecture and get scolded by my parents. Stop behaving like a tourist, they'd say! I love the energy the people have here. Ever ready to have fun, even if it is by just having a sandesh (famous Bengali sweet) or standing with friends and chatting for hours or going to the malls or celebrating some festival. Finding happiness in small things, is an art and habit I, for one, truly admire!
