WHILE I WAS LISTENING TO...

a song called "Judy and her dream of horses" by the band "Bella and Sebastian", I drew this. Really cool song this. Its a song about a "teenage rebel" girl, Judy, who writes a sad song and has a dream about horses and stuff..I guess we all write songs and poems and are just about figuring things out in our teens. I remember I was pretty moody when I was a teenager..was happy in my room with my paints and books..well not that I still don't like being home with my folks now..I'm not totally averse to going out..now! Well..its a phase..i guess..

HAPPY DIWALI!

The festival of lights is here. I feel blessed to have my mum and bro with me in my new home in Bangalore, for Diwali. We've been having a pretty rough time, with the cyclone Hud Hud, which has practically devastated my home town Vizag. Our house is in a bad state, windows broken, balcony railings broken, trees gone, no electricity...Dad had to rush down to Vizag from Calcutta (where my family is presently based) to try and fix things. And hence he couldn't make it Bangalore. Missing you, Baba. On the bright side, things are improving in the city very quickly. Semblance of normalcy has been achieved. Electricity and telephone lines are almost restored. Thank god for that!

COUNTDOWN BEGINS!

The countdown begins! Durga Pujo is just a month away! Yeaaa! It's such an exciting time of the year, especially for us Bengalis. Kolkata right now is preparing for Ma Durga's arrival, in full swing.

REVISITING SOME OLD WORK

Around a year and a half back, I was preparing to go abroad for my Masters. Putting an illustration portfolio together, without having the background was tricky. And I was confused..like really confused! I made these acrylic paintings back then. They are a bit moody, no?

ODE TO INDIAN POLITICS...!

I know the 'election fever' in India has died down and this post has come in way too late, but what the hey! All those weird memes have stopped appearing too...you know what I'm talking about, yea?The formula for one such meme being, whatever-the-hell-you-can-think-of + "is baar Modi Sarkar"= irritating meme!!! Blah! Anyhoo....Manish @ Tikdam is kinda pro-Aam Admi Party and during the elections, which happened this year, he came up with an idea of making an illustration based fun communication material. Our bit of volunteering work! Here's what it looked like.

DON'T REGRET

Been almost a month already. New city, new job, new house, new everything! Was the whole shift worth it? Well, only time will tell..so far so good, though! And that's all one can hope for..living away from your family, moving out of your comfort zone, testing yourself...can be tough..but it feels good at the end of the day! There's definitely a sense of achievement. Just ticking off another thing from my "to do" list, I guess...

DIY STAMPS

I've been very busy over the past week, with the packing et al...Moving to a different city can be quite stressful. Luckily for me I have all the support of my parents. They are literally helping me with everything. Don't know what I'd do without them! Between last minute office work and packing all my stuff..I found a bit of glass putty.

THE WINDS ARE CHANGING

The winds are changing it seems like and its time for a change for me as well. Change is good because it makes you move out of your comfort zone and take on new challenges and learn new things. Change is scary but that's the chance you have to take, I guess. I'm going to have a change of scene very soon. A new place..new possibilities..new experiences..must confess that I'm a tad bit nervous but I am damn excited too. Hoping for the best!

EARTHEN HAND PAINTED BOWLS

Found these earthen bowls in Ma's dressing table with her favourite piece of junk jewellery and a lovely hair pin. In Kolkata, most sweets are served in similar earthen pots and bowls.

DREAM A LITTLE DREAM

There are some dreams which I fervently wish I could capture and bottle'em up forever. Sometimes they are vivid and sometimes things are blurry, but only the feeling is left...like an aftermath.

MEMORY LANE

England will always hold a special place in my heart.I grew up reading the books of Enid Blyton, Roald Dahl and Jane Austen and watching movies like Marry Poppins. So obviously, I went searching for all the lovely things that Miss Blyton had described in her oh so lovely books! The lush green meadows, the daisies, girls in pretty lace frocks and hats on a glorious summer day, charming ladies in the park with picnic baskets full of goodies like freshly baked cakes and biscuits, sandwiches, and strawberries with whipped cream....ahhh...

EARTH DAY

Doing my bit for Earth Day.

HAND DRAWN TYPOGRAPHY

Have been experimenting with hand lettering for a while. So when I was asked to create artwork with quotes and the subject, I thought the best way to go about it would be to combine both using hand drawn typography. This is what I came up with.

INFOGRAPHICS FOR BIZ DIVA

Biz Divas is a women-centric Non Profit Organisation based in Gurgaon - with the motto, “Women Inspire Change”. The brief was to bring alive the spirit of the NGO and to share their amazing story. I made an infographic and other illustrations and graphics (which were to be printed on various products, like mugs and tote bags etc).

ILLUSTRATION FOR MERCHANDISE

Recently I participated in the Construkt Festival at Bangalore with the TIKDAM team. We made thematic merchandise for the same. Typography based illustrations and charecters were created to tell a cute story! Here's what I made...

PRINT AD DESIGN

This creative was for the Kempinski Hotel New Delhi for the "Valentine's day 2014". So you know the key words were 'love', 'bollywood' and 'all things romantique'.....sigh..I made two options, a collage and a vector based one. Guess which one was used...? <hint hint>

OH! KOLKATA!

Funny, you know. The thing about places. What makes the place/space the way it is? Do they have a character? A Sense of Space. I've always been intrigued by this aspect of architecture. The effect it has on us and what we as the 'users' contribute in making the space 'humane'. There are so many other factors to it, of course. I did a literature review on this topic in my 4th year of college (while I was studying architecture). Ahh...those were the days! Making this illustrative map for a competition on TDAT got me thinking about this again! It’s an amazing site where artists are invited to submit maps of their favorite place or any place actually. So this is what I made. A map of Calcutta. Though I did not grow up in this city, it’s been home for me for the past 3 years. And plus I am a Bengali. The city never fails to amaze me. I used to stand transfixed in the middle of the road admiring the architecture and get scolded by my parents. Stop behaving like a tourist, they'd say! I love the energy the people have here. Ever ready to have fun, even if it is by just having a sandesh (famous Bengali sweet) or standing with friends and chatting for hours or going to the malls or celebrating some festival. Finding happiness in small things, is an art and habit I, for one, truly admire!

GRANNY'S INN BANARAS

The organised chaos of the Holy City of Banaras is something one simply can not understand until you expereience it. Oh! the sights and sounds of the cradle of Hinduism. I was mesmerised to see life and death on the same street. I deisgned the art work and logo for Granny's Inn, which is a quiant homestay run by two extremely sweet and warm ladies in the very heart of Banaras. It is surely the best place to stay if anyone is planning a trip to Banaras in the future. I for one highly recomend it!

SUMMER FRUITS

I'm a bit fussy when it comes to fruits, I’m sorry to say. I mean, come on, who likes sour oranges or grapes! And I like trying new stuff. For example, I loved the ‘Dragon fruit’, which I tried in England. It’s so amazing to think that it’s actually a cactus fruit! We rarely find it here in Calcutta and it’s darn costly too. But some of my local favs are the ‘Rattling Rose Apple’, colloquially "Gulab Jaam", the Wax Apple i.e. Jamrul and the Musk Melon or Kharmuja.

Ever get that feeling? When you smell something amazing and you wish that you could just eat it up? Well, I get it whenever I smell a rose! And Nature's solution to this problem of mine comes in the form of the Rattling Rose apple. It’s subtle, delicate and tastes like rose. Perfect! And the Wax Apple, so pretty to look at and it tastes just like summer!

PATTERNS

Sometimes its fun to do just pick up a paint brush and start painting, without any thought in your head. You know, like, what to make, what's it for , what's it gonna look like...Sometimes its cool to let your mind wander and think about random stuff and let the brush just glide! Spent some time on a regular sunday doing just that...and then it kinda made sense, so I put it all together in the form of patterns! Heres what they finally looked like...

TRAVEL SKETCHES

I like traveling. But, there are a few 'buts'. Especially in this part of the neighborhood! I highly recommend taking the following steps for a relatively smooth trip. Never ever go to the railway station without confirming the train timings. You might have to wait at the station for hours together if the train is late. Mentally counsel yourself about ignoring the dirt in the station and the toilets. Travel lite. I know, I know...!! its a lost cause if you are traveling with your family. Oh, how meticulously things are packed! Right from plates, spoons, glasses, mugs, savouries, juice cartons, cookies, 7 sets of clothes, change of shoes and matching accessories, all for just 3 days....phew! Plus, packed home cooked food for breakfast, lunch and dinner! Carrying your preferred source of entertainment with you is very important. For me, its my sketch book, pens, a good novel or comics, music on the phone/tab. Now, you have the long journey ahead of you.But most importanly, all the 'buts' add to the whole experience and in turn make it memeorable. And I for one like to document them in the form of sketches/doodles. Here's another example ;-) !

HOPE

Today is the 65th Republic Day of my country, IndiaI think this line from Neil Young's song "Hey Hey My My (into the black)", spiritually applies to our country's state and the stance that we need to/ought to take. With the stuff that's happening all around us, we can either fight (in which ever small way that we can) or shut up and care two hoots! Well, I think change starts from the personal level. Everyday I see educated peeps doing things that are so not right! We can't just preach anymore, we need to practice. Small bits add to the big picture. Whether its keeping one's surroundings clean, recycling or just being honest and kind or saving electricity..As a designer I hope to use my design/illustrations (as that's what I do the best) to just talk about these things..
and maybe, just maybe it'll help in some which way...

TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHY: DOORS

There's something about these rusty old doors and window (some wooden, some iron) that's so alluring. I found these beauties during my travels in India.

THEME: MYSTICAL HIMALAYAS

"Located in the heart of Kumaon, Almora offers a tranquil neighborhood that allows you to let your hair down and relax. Snow view Cottage is just the place that gives a glimpse of the beauty of the Great Himalayas and brings you closer to the wild."
I was to capture this in an illustration and then turn it into a poster. So here's what I made...!

VISUAL NOTE TAKING

GARBAGE IN THE MIND
Went for a 'Picnic' the other day, to a place called Bashirhat (about 50kms from Calcutta). Loads of people go there in the winter for a day out. There's lot of space where you can cook or maybe barbecue (used to have a lot of fun doing it at home in Vizag or in Coventry,UK with my friends and family). But alas! That's not the way we do it here..not in this part of the neighborhood, at least. It was such a pretty and serene place with ponds full of fish, coconut and palm trees everywhere.... an idyllic village in the background with brick houses, farmers tending to their crop... yellow and green fields of mustard and paddy. You get the drift...
But here's what the educated peeps from the "CITY" did to the place...(I took visual notes of whatever was happening around me- and that was the only way I could protest, sadly...)

COMMUNICATION MATERIAL

Info Graphic/ Communication Material/ Illustration designed for Cinnamon Stays (a home stay based in Gurgaon, India). The graphic describes the various things that one can do in the holy city of Varanasi. I have tried to capture the vivid colors and the organised chaos of the city in my illustration. Must say, I had a lot of fun making it!
